Attitude
to Work: An Interesting Recipe on How to Grow or
Remain Stagnant at What You Do.

“Talent is never enough. With a few exceptions, the best players are the hardest workers.” – Magic Johnson
Remember Magic Johnson, right? The exceptional US
basketball player; the face of the game that comes to mind every time you see a
shirt with LA Lakers 32 on it? His real name is Earvin Johnson, but he had an
exceptional attitude to his job, and people called him “Magic”! The man said it
was not just his talent.
Stamp it Hard!
Magic Johnson said working hard pays. But that’s not all there is to being the best. Your work habits encompass everything that hard work alone would never make you achieve. So, let us examine these work habits; the attitude at whatever work we do, that determines whether we become the “magic” in what we do or become just another of the many persons doing that same thing - be you a senior executive of a fortune 500 company, a sports person, a driver, a roadside mechanic, hawker, a teacher, nurse, doctor or a trader, fashionista or even a student or a total housewife, or a leader in any capacity. Your attitude to it would determine whether you grow higher, or would remain stagnant at where you started, irrespective of your amazing talents.
Make Yourself Outstanding
Bring out a paper and pen. Use a straight line to divide the paper into two. Write O R D I N A R Y on the left hand side. On the right hand side, write E X T R A O R D I N A R Y. Now take a good look. It appears they two different words, right? They are actually different. Yes, I mean they are same words, with extra making the difference.
You see, any little efforts you make at your work would make the difference. Please always do that extra, not to please anyone or to be noticed, but to make the difference. When you are different, like Magic Johnson, you would be noticed beyond your immediate work place.
Keep Improving, No Matter What
You have been working hard and harder, and it appears you have not been noticed or that extra in your ordinary is not making any difference? You are convinced that you have delivered so much for your boss, your work place, your customers or the people you lead, and they do not yet appreciate it by way of increasing your pay or in other ways? Keep moving, keep improving on yourself. If you had improved on your time management, for instance and it appears it is not noticed, climb the next step on self-improvement, learn other new skills until you get to the top where nobody can be able to ignore you, even if they struggle to do it. Volunteer, if you have to.
Volunteer
If you are self-employed or an artisan, sometime you volunteer to
do the work free for a customer, and you would earn their trust and loyalty,
while you perfect your skills with their job.
Learn A New Skill
Skills are those things you are very good at, that everyone wants. Your skills make you irreplaceable at your work place. And guess what? It must not be hard skill like computer programming or How to fly a space craft. Soft skills as simple as emotional intelligence, self-control, adaptability and effective communication are golden skills that you can easily acquire and you’d become outstanding. Everybody – customer, co-workers, competitors, bosses, subordinates, CEOs all wants to work with people who can read the room, who respects them, who makes the work environment feel cool. Some of these soft skills would easily earn you that.
Effective Communication
No matter how good you are, if you cannot communicate effectively with your co-workers, boss, subordinate, customer or even your competitors, friend and relations, there will always be wide distance between that thing you are very good at and those who need it.
At work place, effective communication is always the greatest factor. You may have the greatest ideas or points that may earn you or your organization that mega billion dollars, but if you cannot deliver it well, nobody would get it. Effective communication is one soft skill that is a must for all.
Well
Done.
The most important step is always the first steps. Kudos to you for taking the step of reading and understanding this recipe. That’s some great job! Please go on ahead to practice them in real life, and soonest people would start telling you “great job” always. You are on the path to becoming a superstar at whatever you do and more.
